Pumpkin Spice Coffee: How to Brew It So It Actually Tastes Good

Pumpkin spice gets made fun of, but on a cold morning in October it's hard to beat. You don't need a drive-thru or a bottle of syrup to get it. A bag of pumpkin spice flavored coffee and the brewer you already own will do the job.
What pumpkin spice coffee is
Pumpkin spice coffee is regular roasted coffee with the flavor of the spices that go in pumpkin pie: cinnamon, nutmeg, and a little sweetness. The flavor is in the beans, so you brew it like any other coffee. No syrup, no extra step.

Pick the right grind
- Standard: drip coffee makers and pour-over
- Coarse: French press, cold brew, or a percolator
- Espresso: espresso machines and moka pots
- Whole Bean: grind it right before you brew for the most flavor
How to brew it
Drip machine: start with about 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 ounces of water, the same as a regular cup. If the spice tastes faint, add a little more coffee instead of brewing a weaker pot.
French press: use a coarse grind, add hot water just off the boil, and steep for about 4 minutes before you press. The spice notes come through strong this way.
Cold brew: pumpkin spice makes a good cold brew for fall afternoons. Steep coarse grounds in cold water in the fridge for 12 to 24 hours, then strain.
Make it taste like a coffee-shop latte
Brew it a little strong, then add warm milk or creamer. A small pinch of cinnamon on top helps too. Plenty of people drink it black, though. The flavor is in the bean, so it doesn't need sugar to taste like fall.
Taking it to the jobsite
Flavored coffee holds up well in a thermos. Preheat the thermos with hot water, dump it, and fill it as full as you can. Less air keeps it hot longer.
